Hesperia began as a railroad townsite in the 1880s, named for Hesperus — the Greek figure of the west. For decades it stayed small, a stop on the way up the Cajon Pass.
That changed in 1954, when developer M. Penn Phillips and heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey bought 23,000 acres and divided them into roughly 30,000 parcels. Their Hesperia Inn and golf course drew Hollywood guests to the desert, and the city incorporated in 1988.
